We can be as happy as we choose to be!

Let's face it, 'happiness' is a subject that's been done and over done, trivialized and elaborated to the point of mass misconception about what it is and what it isn't. Most of us have our own preconceived ideas about what happiness is and how it should appear.  According to the Dalai Lama, Aristotle and Mahatma Gandhi - happiness is not something ready made. It comes from our own actions. It is when what we think, what we say, and what we do are in harmony.

Modern science defines 'happiness' as the positive range of emotions that we feel when we are content or full of joy. Happiness depends upon ourselves. It is not something that happens to us, it happens from us. If we look to others for happiness, we will never be happy. If we look outward for our happiness, we will never be happy with ourselves.

First of all, we need to recognise that happiness is a choice, our choice. That’s right, a choice, it doesn’t just happen. It is a daily and active choice we make. We all have the ability to choose to be happy. We can start to be happy any moment we choose, all we need to do is make a conscious choice to seize the day to live each precious moment fully with enthusiasm.

We can be as happy as we choose to be!

It is possible to be happy, no matter where we are!

We may not be able to change our circumstances in which we find ourselves.  Yes, unpleasant things outside our control can occur, but we still have the power to change how happy we are – by the way we choose to react to what happens. Being happy doesn't mean that everything in our life is perfect. It's means that we have ability to look beyond the problems and the difficulties. The fascinating thing is that when we confront annoyances and crises with awareness and grace, not only do we greatly increase our happiness, but we will often vibrate with joy even when our situations aren’t ideal.

In practice it’s not always easy, but one of the most exciting findings from recent research is that 'choosing to be happy', like many other life skills, can be cultivated. The more practice we have, the more happiness will erupt. Sometimes happiness finds us when we least expect it. The quest for true happiness is not really a quest at all, but a choice. So don't wait another moment. Open to a different possibility and choose happiness!
